Environmental Support

Fuel efficient vessels

The Caterpillar diesel engines driving Peppermint Bay II and Yamaha outboards fitted to Adventure have been chosen because they are the most fuel efficient in their class. Electronically controlled and calibrated these engines represent the latest technology in low emission, low fuel consumption and quiet operation. The engines and hull shapes are designed to work in concert, requiring minimal fuel consumption and resulting emissions.

Offsetting emissions with Green fleet

The Bruny Wildlife Adventure is very conscious of the local environment in which it operates, but also the overall environmental impact of the tour. As such a proportion of all ticket sales will be provided to Greenfleet to allow them to plant native trees in Tasmania to offset the emissions from fuel used in our two boats and two minibuses during the 2008-09 Bruny Wildlife Adventure season.

The planting of native trees in Tasmania has the specific benefit of offsetting carbon emissions, but there is also what is termed "co-benefits". Co benefits include contributing to improved land and water quality by reducing salinity, reducing sediment run off and stabilizing soil in Tasmania's natural areas.

Minimal physical foot print on Bruny Island

The Bruny Wildlife Adventure has a minimal physical foot print on Bruny Island, in terms of the impact of our guests on terrestrial and marine environments.

Adventure has been fitted with an eco toilet system, which allows us to transport all waste products off the island and back to Hobart for appropriate processing. Absolutely no waste products are discharged into the marine or terrestrial systems.

Your Bruny Island cruise guide and skipper will also transport any rubbish and recycling back to Hobart on your behalf for appropriate processing.

The departure point on the expedition vessel is Adventure Bay, a spectacular coastal environment, but one which is also very fragile. To avoid the construction of unnecessary man made structures, the Bruny Wildlife Adventure has deliberately not undertaken any new construction. Partnerships with existing locals businesses have been formed; specifically

Partnering with local communities

Partnering with local business reduces the physical foot print of the Bruny Wildlife Adventure on Bruny, but it also supports local businesses and families on the island. Some of the world class produce included in your expedition includes exquisite oysters from Get Shucked Oyster Farm (www.getshucked.com.au) and indulgent fudge from Island Produce.

Other Bruny Island business partners include:

  • Colin and Janice Kaden who operate a school bus service on Bruny Island.
  • Michael
  • Chris and Jill Wedding at the Adventure Bay Store who supply fuel and mixed supplies.
